Sweat Reduction with miraDry
Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Nearly 8 million Americans are estimated to suffer from this condition. miraDry is a noninvasive and advanced procedure for treating excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis. The technology uses microwaves for eliminating sweat glands and odor in your armpits. miraDry was FDA cleared in 2015 for treating axillary hyperhidrosis. This is also called excessive underarm sweating.
miraDry handheld device will be used by the treatment provider for aiming electromagnetic energy at the sweat glands present beneath the skin. Your sweat glands will be gently heated and eliminated. The technique will cool and protect the upper skin layers at the same time.
Board certified plastic surgeons at the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) provide safe and proven non-surgical med spa services, including miraDry sweat reduction treatment to patients in Houston, Texas, TX, and surrounding locations.
Proven Effective
miraDry has been noted to effectively cure axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis and axillary osmidrosis (foul-smelling sweat) as per a 2013 research published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy. According to clinical evidence obtained in April 2012 by the University of British Columbia, miraDry treatment could effectively reduce underarm sweating in more than 90% patients. Sweat declined by an average 82% in patients. miraDry attained a satisfaction rate of 90%.
Suitable Candidacy
Most patients with axillary hyperhidrosis will qualify for this treatment. However, people with implanted electronic devices, such as electronic pacemakers are not eligible for miraDry. Experts suggest that patients that are sensitive to lidocaine and epinephrine should also avoid the treatment.
miraDry Procedure
Electromagnetic energy will be transmitted to a specific spot beneath the underarm skin using a handheld device. The heat will result in the breaking down of sweat glands. The upper layers of the skin will not be affected by the heat. Sweat glands remain dormant once they are removed. Hence, the results of miraDry are visible almost immediately with enduring results.
You may need only one session, but you should consider two sessions for optimal results. Treatment providers, in rare instances, may recommend a third session. The procedure will take about an hour in a med spa setting. They may provide you with local anesthesia in the form of lidocaine injections before the treatment begins. There is no downtime to the procedure, and it doesn’t result in any discomfort.
The treatment provider may recommend a mild pain medication for a few days. Most patients resume regular routine and return to work right after the procedure. You should be able to start exercising in a few days.
Common Side Effects
miraDry has a few side effects in the form of redness, tenderness, and swelling of the underarms. Tingling sensation or numbness in the upper arms and armpit area may take a few days or weeks to completely subside. Most patients can return to work and resume their normal activities almost immediately after the treatment session. There is no downtime to miraDry.
