Consultation
A detailed consultation is an initial step in male breast reduction surgery. At the time of the consultation, the surgeon will assess the patient’s candidacy, evaluate his personal cosmetic goals and needs, and answer any questions that the patient may have regarding the procedure.
In addition, the surgeon will review the patient’s previous medical records and undertake a general health and breast examination. An individualized gynecomastia cosmetic surgery plan will be developed based on the feedback that the patient provides during the consultation. The surgeon will also offer pre and post-surgical guidelines to the patient for effective surgery.
Anesthesia
In general, male breast reduction surgery is undertaken with the patient under general anesthesia. However, in some cases, the surgeon may recommend local anesthesia with sedation. This is the initial step after the patient is brought into the surgery room.
An anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist will remain in attendance during the procedure to oversee the patient’s response to anesthesia. After the procedure is complete, the patient will be brought out of anesthesia.
Placement of Incisions
Once the patient is under anesthesia, the surgeon will place the incisions discreetly in pre-determined areas and with consideration to the patient’s personal incision preferences.
Only small incisions for liposuction may be made if the gynecomastia procedure only involves the reduction of fatty tissue. However, to eliminate glandular tissue, slightly larger incisions along the natural skin crease will be made.
Surgery
The surgeon will cautiously remove excess fat and tissue through the incisions. In many cases, gynecomastia surgery involves liposuction as well as direct excision techniques.
The surgeon will undertake liposuction to eliminate excess fat from the incisions made within the areola borders or beneath the breast. They will remove excess glandular tissue and skin via direct excision technique. Liposuction will be used to contour the chest as well.
The procedure is usually undertaken as an outpatient surgery. The surgeon may perform the surgery at an accredited surgical center, a hospital, or a private surgical suite. This decision will be taken during the pre-operative consultation with the patient.
Incision Closure
After the surgery is complete, the surgeon will seal the incisions with internal and external sutures. They may place temporary drain tubes underneath the skin in the incision areas to collect excess fluid.
The patient will be moved to an observation area for a few hours after the incisions are sealed. The surgeon will cover the incisions with bandages. The patient will eventually need to wear a compression garment for a few weeks to tighten the contours. Drain pipes and incisions will be removed in around one week to ten days after the procedure.
